Donate for Elephants and Humans Alike!

Hi everyone, my name is Trinity Li and I am currently a tenth grader at the Western Academy of Beijing. I love exploring different hobbies, and am currently immersed in dancing ballet and contemporary, as well as KPOP choreography. I enjoy singing and also participate in the girls‘ softball team at our school. Aside from that, I also enjoy boxing, photography, and reading a wide variety of books.

Why I joined the Yunnan Raleigh Youth Camp

At school, two of my favorite subjects are Biology and Individuals & Societies (Social Studies), and a core topic we always investigate is the impact of human society on the natural environment around us. Unfortunately, the conclusion is that humans are quite detrimental to the earth. As human society expands, we have and are continuing to ruin countless habitats and food chains, and this all stems us causing deforestation and the burning of fossil fuels. The damage we‘ve done to our planet ー climate change, depletion of resources, air and water pollution, etc. ー is quickly catching up to us, and not only are we beginning to feel the impact, innocent animals and plants are being roped into our dilemma as well.

On August, 2021, Chinese news reported that a herd of Asian elephants had begun migrating North from their natural habitat in Xishuangbanna, Yunnan, completing straying from all their previous migration trails. Scientists addressed this mysterious change with two possible reasons:
1. The change in the habitat of the elephants
2. A change in the magnetic field of Earth.
For the former, professionals explain that as humans began deforesting the elephants‘ habitat to cultivate plants that produce more value, such as rubber trees, tea trees, and coffee trees, the elephants‘ habitat and access to resources shrank dramatically, forcing them to leave in order to seek more space and food. As for the latter reason, it was theorized that climate change was the cause. The earth is like a giant magnet, its North and South poles creating a magnetic field across it, holding it together.

Elephants ー as well as other animals with migration instincts ー rely on the magnetic field to navigate their migration trails. Global warming messes with the atmosphere, which in turn disarrays the activity of solar radiation and the earth‘s magnetic field. This confused the elephants‘ ability to navigate correctly, causing them to travel in the wrong direction.

Because of the massive size of elephants, they are quite heavy and clumsy. Going the wrong way led them to human villages and fields, causing the trampling of crops and buildings, as well as the blocking of some roads. Yunnan had to compensate for all the damages, yet when we think back on what caused this situation, the answer lies in ourselves.

Human activity is what caused deforestation, which caused the lessening population of trees able to absorb carbon dioxide, and with the continual growth in gas emissions, this is causing global warming, which is good for neither humans nor animals.

I often wonder, how could I make a difference to our world? The answer came to me a few months ago: start little, aim big. At that time, I was brainstorming meaningful projects I could spend time on, and my dad suggested Raleigh‘s Youth Camp in Yunnan during summer holidays. After describing the camp to me, I was immediately interested, and felt like it was a purposeful and fun way to try to help revert the damage we‘ve done to our planet.
